TikTok says it now has more than one billion people on its platform every month.

The milestone comes after the short-form video app launched in 2018.

“More than 1 billion people around the world now come to TikTok every month to be entertained as they learn, laugh, or discover something new,” TikTok said in a blog post.

“We're honoured to be a home for our immensely diverse community of families, small businesses, and creators who transform into our favorite stars.”

TikTok grew significantly during the pandemic as media consumption spiked around the world with ByteDance, the parent company for TikTok, reportedly seeing its revenue more than double in 2020 to US$34.3 billion.

TikTok also expanded its presence around the world, launching its Australian office early last year.

The local team is headed up by former Google executive Lee Hunter as general manager for TikTok Australia. Brett Armstrong, also a former Google executive, joined as general manager for global business solutions.
